The Workshop
Level: Starter.
Prerequisite: None.
Are you ready to dive into the world of rope? This workshop is your starting point to building your solid base. During this workshop we will take you step-by-step through the foundation of kinbaku, traditional Japanese rope bondage. You’ll learn how to fluently tie arms, legs, and how to combine different ties to play with the full body.
The ties we choose will help you to understand how you can use ‘frictions’ and other techniques to create the effect that you want. Which posture and sensations do you want to give your model? How do you do this in a way that looks aesthetic to you and how do you make sure that safety comes first? You’ll notice that this workshop will help you to improve your rope handling and your feeling for tying in general. Since everything we practice is suited for both pain and pleasure we’ll of course also pay attention to communication and all kinds of dynamics during play.
If you come to this workshop as a model, you get to experience ties on most body parts. This is a great opportunity to find out what you like and what you don’t like and to communicate with your rigger about the physical and mental effects of the tying process. This is a very important skill since the collaboration between the two of you decides how your play scene unfolds in terms of safety, sexiness, fun, depth, or whatever it is that you want to get out of your rope time!
You’ll come home with a solid Japanese rope bondage foundation and the skill to safe and playfully combine essential kinbaku elements.
After this workshop the skill level of rigger and rope model will have grown to beginner.
Recommended follow up workshop is our Ryu #1, Kinbaku essentials workshop.

Who’s RopeMarks?
RopeMarks, also known as Bob Roos, is a Dutch rope artist who specializes in Japanese rope bondage, also known as shibari or kinbaku. Professionally he began studying and perfecting his craft in 1999, under the lineage of the late Akechi Denki (明智伝鬼) and Naka Akira (奈加あきら) in Japan. While RopeMarks’ work reflects the traditional techniques taught by these leading kinbakushi, he has also developed his own unique and distinct style. RopeMarks is widely recognized as the foremost Dutch expert in Japanese rope bondage, and is highly respected in the global kinbaku community. He has taught workshops and classes around the world including, but not limited to, Europe, the United States, Russia and Japan. Using the name RopeMarks Ryū he provides real, fun, hands-on, courses, classes, lessons and workshops in Japanese rope bondage worldwide. |
Who’s the Shady Lady?
The Shady Lady is a slightly perverted lady who has been tying regularly with RopeMarks for the past 2,5 years, and her passion for being in rope is still growing. She experiences rope as a means to soften and open up to herself and to her partner, to enter a shared space of eroticism and hyperfocus, to play and to feel pleasure. Although both partners have separate experiences in a rope session, a good session for her creates a magical spark that moves beyond these individual experiences (1+1=3). She likes Japanese aesthetics, semenawa, genuine dynamics between rope partners, BDSM elements mixed with rope, fun and laughter during tying as well as the darker desires that can be expressed in rope (and no, the latter two are not as contradictory as they sound!) |
