Kamoi (鴨居)
Shiki-i (敷居)
Kamoi refers to the upper part of a wooden frame that is grooved to fit fittings such as sliding doors (fusuma) and paper windows (shoji).
A shiki-i is the bottom part of a wooden frame with grooves to fit fittings such as sliding doors (fusuma) and paper windows (shoji).
The Japanese tied on the kamoi when available and only started using bamboo as a replacement when one was not available.
By suggesting the presence of a sliding door, the kamoi also separates the space between the inside and the outside, if you are watching someone being tied on a tatami, you will often be separated from the scene, if you are watching form the next room, by the kamoi.
