Japanese: 間

Ma roughly translates to “gap”, “space”, “pauze” and relates to the Japanese concept of negative space.

In it’s simplest interpretation it’s the “empty space” in any work of art (painting, music, kinbaku, …) where the viewer is intentionally being focused on this.
